Conference calling - keeping small talk to a minimum December 21, 2010 .......................................................................
Almost every conference call begins with an exchange of pleasantries and some small talk in order to put people at ease and allow them to familiarize themselves with the others on the line. And while this is an important thing to do, it is equally important to make sure that this introduction period does not go over its allotted time.
The first thing to do to when the call starts is politely say hello to everyone on the call and then instruct them to give a two-minute introduction about themselves. It will be helpful to either carry a stopwatch or use an online tool to make sure that no one goes over their time. If someone runs over their time, you can say "Yes, thank you very much. We're on a tight schedule here, so would the next person introduce themselves?"
Time is the most precious asset for any company and by limiting the amount of small talk, more businesses operations can be completed in a faster way.
