Recording a conference call
August 27, 2010

Whether you're giving a talk via conference calling or you're just listening in to an interesting speech, you may want to record the content of the call. Some people like to record conference calls in order to avoid taking notes, and some may want to have a copy of a particularly interesting or inspiring topic. In addition, some people might be interested in turning the conference call into a podcast that can be sold or distributed for free, while still others might need to have a recorded copy of the talk for journalistic or research reasons.

There are many factors that might inspire one to record a conference call. If you decide to make a recording of a talk or speech, how can you get the best quality out of your audio?

First, don't use a speaker phone. While it's tempting to put a tape recorder on the table, set the phone to speaker and listen away, you're going to end up with a lot of background noise. Speaker phones are designed to pick up ambient noise - that's why it's easy to talk into them even when you're several feet away. Instead, invest in some special telephone recording gear. There are many devices designed specifically for this purpose, including tiny recorders that fit right into your ear.

You can help to avoid unnecessary noise by not moving around excessively or shuffling papers during the talk. Listen or speak in an empty room with the windows closed to avoid the sounds of cars and wind, which can be amplified on a telephone's microphone.

It's also important to use a high-quality phone, especially if you intended to repurpose the recording as a podcast. While there are some tools that can help remove static and other sounds from the recording, nothing will beat a track that is simply clear and easy to understand. ADNFCR-3767-ID-19924048-ADNFCR
