How to ace a phone interview August 27, 2010 .......................................................................
In today's economy, many people are looking for jobs - and a lot of them aren't having much luck. Companies know that applicants are struggling to make ends meet, and they do what they can to make the process more affordable. So when you do finally land an interview, it's more and more likely that it will be a phone interview.
But don't let a phone interview throw you off of your game. Conference calls like those used in phone interviews are popular and easy. Even if you're phone shy or worry about your voice, you too can master the technique of interviewing over the phone.
First, speak clearly and confidently. This doesn't mean you need to have a flawless response prepared for every question. It's alright to ask for extra time if you aren't sure how to answer, but using fillers like "um," "you know" and "like" can reflect poorly on your ability to interact with clients and speak in front of groups. You're better off saying something like, "May I have a few seconds to think over my response?" Employers will be pleased that you want to take the time to deliver a thoughtful answer, and they'll be even more impressed that you had the poise to ask politely.
Make sure that you maintain an upbeat, positive voice throughout the call. Employers may not be able to see your gestures and movements, but if you're distracted, unhappy or disinterested, that will come through in your voice - likely in more ways than you realize. Remove yourself from any distracting situations, don't fidget and stay focused on the call. Believe it or not, your voice can convey your interest and alertness just as well as your body can.
Conference calling is an excellent way to make a connection with an employer, learn about a company and hopefully get hired. Just be sure to treat the phone interview just as seriously as you would an in-person one.
